Coveville icehouse was used to store ice until it was needed in the summer. Large icehouses were built along the Champlain Canal where the ice was packed in sawdust and stored until the spring and summer, when it was loaded on canal boats and shipped to New York City. This is the New York State Historical Marker located on the west side of the Whitehall Turnpike marking the location of General Burgoyne’s surrender to General Gates on October 17, 1777. This 1927 marker was located slightly north of a larger sign that was erected in 1877. (Courtesy Saratoga Room collection, Saratoga Springs Library.)
